Briefing Looks to the Future

Chartered Accountants Duncan & Toplis held their ninth annual Directors’ Briefing on Friday 17 November at Belton Woods Hotel, near Grantham.

The event, entitled ‘Gearing up for Change?’ was attended by 150 business leaders from across the East Midlands region representing a broad range of different industries.

Once again, Duncan & Toplis Director, Tim Godson, had arranged for eight speakers to participate in the event, giving the delegates a variety of subjects to digest.

The keynote speaker at the popular annual briefing was Henrietta Jowitt, Deputy Director-General, Commercial at the CBI. Henrietta closed the event by providing an update on the political landscape around Brexit, which unsurprisingly was a hot topic throughout the morning.

Mike Martin from Griffin House Consultancy had little to say on Brexit but packed his 25 minute slot with as much information as he could on the data protection changes coming in next year. For many delegates, more information on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was welcomed as the clock ticks towards its introduction from 25 May 2018.

Charlotte Horobin, Region Director for EEF – The Manufacturers’ Organisation, gave a passionate speech about the sector, praising the success of East Midlands manufacturing businesses who are employing more people than any other UK region.

The audience gave a particularly warm round of applause to Steve Gelder MBE following his candid and inspiring talk about the setting up of the Lincolnshire based construction firm, Gelder Group, and the work that they are doing to give opportunities to young people.

Other speakers at the event were Stephen Blackman - Principal Economist at RBS, Russell Copley - MD and Principal Consultant at Greenborough Management, Graham England - Director of Legal Services at Duncan & Toplis Probate Services and Karl McCartney - Former MP for Lincoln.

The event was chaired by Adrian Reynolds, Duncan & Toplis Managing Director. He said: “I thoroughly enjoyed hearing from all of our speakers and thank them for generously giving their time to join us at this important event in our calendar. I would expect that all of the delegates went back to their desk with at least one action point as a result of attending.”
