Starry Starry Night

Lincoln BIG’s Lantern Parade will feature extra sparkle this year, thanks to one of the city’s Christmas-time visitors.

No, it’s not Santa Claus – it’s Andy Jupp of PaperStarlights, who is celebrating 20 years in business in 2016 and who is a long-time trader at Lincoln’s Christmas Market.

Lincoln BIG Events & Promotions Manager Michael Armstrong said that Andy was keen to mark his business milestone, and recognise that fact by donating 70 of his popular starlights to Lincoln BIG for its annual children’s Lantern Parade.”

“On December 15, schoolchildren from the city’s Westgate Academy will be carrying the star lanterns attached to their light wands, as they process from Lincoln Cornhill, up the High Street and Steep Hill to Castle Hill, where a carol service will take place,” said Mr Armstrong.

“We are delighted at Andy’s generosity and the fact that his donation will add significantly to the festive ambience of this popular event in our annual calendar.”

Andy Jupp has been trading at the Lincoln Christmas Market for many years, from a stall traditionally located on Union Road, near to the entrance of The Lawns complex.

“This year we are celebrating our twentieth year of trading and, to make the occasion extra special, we wondered if Lincoln BIG would accept a donation of lanterns for its Lantern parade,” said Mr Jupp.

“We have enjoyed a long and happy relationship with the market.  Since we have had a stall at this event we have made lots of nice friends from all over the place, both traders and residents.

“We attend a lot of different markets, but the Lincoln one is special. One of the lovely things about it is that lots of families have grown up with us and now their children are visiting us and buying their own starlights,” said Andy.

The City of Lincoln Council, oversees the Lincoln Christmas Market and the bookings of stalls for the event, which get snapped-up very quickly.

The City of Lincoln Council’s Principal Events and Culture Officer Claire McDowall said:  “PaperStarlights has long been one of the most popular stalls at the market and we love seeing Andy return every year to help get people in the Christmas spirit. The lanterns are beautiful and really add to the festive atmosphere.

“This year visitors will be able to find Andy in his usual spot in Union Road from 1 – 4 December, and it’s fantastic that even more people will be able to enjoy seeing the starlights during the lantern parade later in the month.”
