Innovation and Opportunity Showcased at Leeds Event

Greater Lincolnshire occupies a unique position at the forefront of the agricultural technology industry, according to a leading academic speaking at this week’s Lincolnshire in Leeds event.

Hosted by Team Lincolnshire on Tuesday 5th November, the event brought together companies from across the region to showcase the county’s potential for inward investment.

Professor Simon Pearson, Professor of Agri-food Technology at the University of Lincoln, said that the combination of the county’s long agricultural heritage and reputation for innovation makes it the perfect proving ground for the technologies of the future.

Professor Pearson said: “The food sector is facing a number of challenges. Government policies are changing and some of the main issues the agri-food sector has to solve surround migration. We are losing migrant workers who typically work in low-paid jobs in the food sector and we have to find other ways of addressing the problem collectively.

“At the university, we have a number of initiatives we are working on which aim to deliver robotics and AI for the UK’s food sector. We are at the forefront of new technology and are encouraging young people into the sector.

“We are recruiting actively at our fantastic base in Riseholme to help us with research and skills. We want to expand our in-house expertise and we work closely with the Greater Lincolnshire LEP and businesses across the county to make sure we are always on point.”

The event at East 59th in Leeds was the latest in a series run by Team Lincolnshire, spreading the message of the county’s key industries and growth areas.

Paul Bennett, Unit Director for the Midlands region at Team Lincolnshire member Delta Simons, said: “Events like these are really important for Team Lincolnshire, both in spreading the county’s positive messages and also meeting with like-minded businesses from further afield.

“The Lincolnshire in Leeds event has given the county a platform in one of the UK’s most vibrant business cities, and we’re already looking forward to collaborating with the region as much as we can.”

Simon Toplass, Managing Director of Hull-based Pagabo, said: “The event provided us with a great opportunity to meet with businesses from both Lincolnshire and Yorkshire and hear about some of the successes of both regions.

“As a technology-focused business ourselves, it was very interesting to hear how Lincolnshire is using a tech-led approach to solve issues around labour in the agriculture sector and how the future of that industry is shaping up.”

The team will attend next year’s MIPIM, a large-scale investment exhibition in the Palais de Festival in Cannes in the south of France which attracts tens of thousands of visitors.
