Planning submitted for Ongo’s first carbon neutral homes

Planning submitted for Ongo’s first carbon neutral homes

As part of their commitment to the environment, Ongo have submitted planning permission for eight carbon neutral homes to be built in Westcliff, Scunthorpe.

If given the go ahead, the homes will take the place of garages and unused land on two sites. The first between Bridges Road and Chaucer Avenue, and the second between Chaucer Avenue and Chapman Avenue in Scunthorpe.

There will be a mix of three and four-bedroom homes available for affordable rent, all of which come with modern features and finishes, open plan living and dedicated car parking spaces.

Creating carbon neutral homes means balancing the amount of carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere, for example through renewable energy created by photovoltaic (PV) panels.

The UK is set to see thousands more carbon neutral homes in the coming years, as the government has set in law a target to bring greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, and a Future Homes Standard.

It is expected that homes built to this standard will demand a carbon reduction of between 75-80%, compared to those built to the current energy efficiency requirements. However, the homes Ongo have planned would see a carbon reduction of 100%.

Amy Schoenmaker, Development Project Manager at Ongo said: “We are beyond excited to be leading locally with our first carbon neutral homes, keeping our promise to look after the environment.

“There are a huge list of benefits to them, and after taking the plans to public consultation, we were delighted to make changes based on feedback from local residents.

“A high percentage of the garages on this land are unused, and with demand for larger properties in the area so high, it’s great to hopefully be able to deliver those.

“This scheme is being used as a blueprint by Ongo for possible future carbon neutral homes and we are hoping to get approval as soon as possible so we can get started.”

The outcome of this planning application is expected within the next couple of months.
