Local companies create opportunity for apprentice

Ongo and GS Kelsey have created a brand new apprenticeship opportunity, funded entirely through partnership working on large projects in the region.

Luke Cooley was taken on by GS Kelsey in April as a Joinery Apprentice, to work exclusively on Ongo projects including the delivery of new homes on Station Road and Bellingham Road in Scunthorpe.

The apprenticeship programme will last for two years, and will see Luke studying at North Lindsey College to gain qualifications, whilst learning valuable, practical skills and knowledge on site.

When asked about his new role, Luke said: “I applied for the apprenticeship because I was sick of being stuck doing college work from home and not getting experience. I’ve always wanted to get a trade and I thought this was a perfect opportunity.

“I’m really enjoying it, it was a great decision for me and I’m learning so many invaluable skills on the job whilst getting paid. I’d recommend an apprenticeship to anyone.”

Luke is one of four apprentices currently employed by GS Kelsey, as part of their commitment to continue investing in young people, to aid the future growth and success of the business.

Matthew Robinson, Director at GS Kelsey said: “2021 marks 25 years in business and we’ve reached this milestone having worked with local organisations such as Ongo.

“We certainly have more positive social and economic outcomes when we partner with local organisations and people, and this is another example of the benefits of working together in the community.

“We’re delighted to offer this opportunity to Luke and we wish him well in his study and time working with us.”

Ongo and GS Kelsey have worked in partnership on a number of large projects over the last five years. These include The Arc in Westcliff and most recently Myos House, a brand new, flagship dementia care scheme in Scunthorpe.
