Cabinet backs ambitious plan for £20m Government bid to transform Boston town centre

Boston Borough Council has cemented its commitment in transforming an undervalued and under-utilised part of the town centre.

At the council’s Cabinet meeting last night (Monday, July 4) members unanimously backed plans to submit a bid for up to £20m of funding as part of the second round of the Government’s Levelling Up Fund. The Cabinet agreed to submit the bid ahead of the deadline for the fund this week.

The ambitious plans seek to attract Government investment to deliver new public realm, as well as bringing forward adjacent sites for a variety of uses. The proposals will address the vacant Crown House and B&M buildings, and the proposal is intended to be high-quality and high-impact making a visible positive difference for the short and longer-term. The proposals will then compliment the wider regeneration ambition for the area.

Councillor Nigel Welton, Boston Borough Council Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth, said: “The unanimous support from members to submit this bid shows this Council is committed to accessing Government funding that helps bring investment and ambitious improvements to Boston.

“The scheme will bring public and private sector investment to the heart of Boston and with it, improve the economy, enhance Boston as a vibrant and attractive place to live and work and create a sense of pride for residents today and for future generations.

“It is an exciting time for Boston – we have an ambitious bid which can deliver real change for our town centre, for our residents, businesses and visitors.”

Cllr Paul Skinner, Leader of Boston Borough Council said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Boston to bring impactful regeneration of a brownfield site right in the town centre and I’m pleased members have given it their full backing.

“This bid shows our commitment to Boston now and for years to come. This funding, if successful, has the potential to bring significant, positive change to the town and I’m excited for the opportunities it could bring.”

A decision on the outcome of the bid from the Government is expected in the Autumn.
