Join us for our March face-to-face Boston Chamber Network.
This event is kindly hosted by Chamber members, HMP North Sea Camp.
HMP North Sea Camp is a male open (category D) prison in the Lincolnshire Fens and is part of the East Midlands estate. It has a current operational capacity of 300 and receives prisoners from all areas of the UK. It accepts prisoners with a variety of sentences and offences. The establishment has a specific role as a Resettlement prison to prepare prisoners for release- some of whom have been in custody for a considerable length of time.
“As a resettlement prison, one of our aims is to provide prisoners with the education and skills they need to gain employment on release from prison & reduce the chance of them reoffending.”
The prison releases predominantly into Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire & London, although prison leavers also return to, and resettle in, other areas of the country.
On site they have a farm that consists of 200 acres of productive land. This is mainly laid to grass for livestock use. Today they have 200 breeding ewes, 20 breeding Sows and currently 12 beef cattle. Some of these breeds are traditional British rare breeds such as Middle White, Large Black, and Welsh pigs, and Lincoln Long wool sheep. Their cattle come from a prison dairy farm in Wales where they will soon be crossing the dairy cow with a Lincoln Red.
The stock is finished on the farm, and they end up in the prison kitchen and local market. The farm is Red tractor farm assured beef & Lamb and soon to be farm assured vegetable production. Bees have recently been added as a new venture on the farm setting up an apiary in the orchard.
There are 50 polytunnels, 3 green houses and a market garden growing veg, and salad crops for prison kitchens along with plants and flowers for prison gardens. A 2-acre Orchard was established in 2022 with traditional British apple trees as part of their ecology network for an Orchard in every prison and part of the Queens green canopy ‘plant a tree for Jubilee. As part of the government’s plan to grow 30,000 hectares of trees to reduce their carbon footprint, the prison service is targeting growing 100,000 trees per year. North Sea Camp is the biggest grower having grown 25,000 trees in 2022 and are on course to grow 30,000 in 2023. These will be planted on the MoJ and MoD estates.
Please note that all visitors will need to bring photographic ID with them on the day.
