New name announced for Scunthorpe Dementia Care Scheme

Ongo have today announced the name of their brand new dementia development in Scunthorpe as Myos House, after launching a competition in June

The £4.4m project is on Wariwck Road in Scunthorpe and is made up of 25 two bedroom apartments and communal spaces for residents to socialise.

It offers something completely new to North Lincolnshire and along with the dementia friendly layout of building and modern design, specialist features include safe and secure landscaped gardens, CCTV and staff on hand 24 hours a day.

This will support families to live together for as long as possible, instead of moving into residential care and introducing unwelcome change.

To celebrate the flagship scheme and get local people involved, Ongo launched a competition where children under the age 16 could send their creative ideas for a name.

Representatives from here and North Lincolnshire Council decided on the winning name, which was put forward by 8 year old Jessie Stocks from Gainsborough.

When receiving her prize Jessie said: “I feel very lucky about winning the competition. I enjoyed doing research with my mum, which helped me pick the name and I’m looking forward to telling my new school teacher.

“My great granddad had dementia any my mum has told me all about him so I feel proud to be a part of something that will look after people.”

Georgie McGuire, Development Project Manager at Ongo commented: “The name Myos derives from the word Myosotis, more commonly known as the forget-me-not.

“This small blue flower we all know and love is long associated with dementia, so fits perfectly, and we felt suited the homes to a tee. It truly is a fantastic and life changing project and we can’t wait for Myos House to open in May 2021.

“Thank you to everyone that got involved in the competition, and make sure you keep an eye out on more ways to get involved.”

Ongo have invested over £3m in the scheme, £1m was granted from Homes England and North Lincolnshire Council has contributed around £300,000. Local firm G.S. Kelsey are building the scheme with help from local contractors Overhall and Brook & Mayo.
