Scunthorpe boxing club celebrates a year of success

Riddings Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) are celebrating their first anniversary in their new home, after moving to Enderby Road, Scunthorpe in November last year.

The club was established over 40 years ago, and has provided hundreds of sports sessions and activities ever since. Their decision to move into larger premises came after announcing their missions to offer even more opportunities to local people.

Highlights over the last year include training 18 boxers to compete for the club across the country, along with hosting two huge boxing shows with hundreds of attendees.

The club now has at least two sessions each evening, ranging from beginners to squad boxers, with plans to introduce more boxing shows and sessions going forward.

Pete Smith, Head Coach at the club said: “Despite launching in a time when Covid and lockdowns still played a huge part in our everyday lives, we are over the moon with how far we’ve come.

“We spend a lot of time with those who have aspirations to be professional, but equally with those who just want to get fit or learn new skills. We welcome everyone and are really proud of that.

“We all work and have other commitments but being able to put smiles on faces, watching people progress and helping them with that journey gets us all here, and we’re more passionate than ever.

“Myslelf, Kenny, Steve, Neil, Matt, Chris, Dec and Dale would like to thank everyone that has made this year so fantastic for Riddings ABC. We have huge plans over the next 12 months and can’t wait for you all to be a part of it.”

Ongo has supported the club over a number of years and played a huge part in their revamp, modifying their Enderby Road building to make best use of the space for the team.

They’ve also helped the club by awarding them a community grant, access other funding and continue to work with young people to attend sessions.

Kerry Copson, Community Development Manager at Ongo said: “We are delighted for the club and the huge success it has had over the last 12 months.

“Riddings ABC provides a place for our young people to learn new skills, be part of a team and really put their focus into something. But it doesn’t just stop there, it’s for all ages and abilities and it’s great to see.

“We are delighted to work alongside them and cannot wait to see where their journey takes them in the coming years.”

Funding and support from the club has also been received from MP Holly Mumby-Croft along with local businesses, Fagan Scaffolding, Bespoke Balloons, LG Gutter Cleaning, Axholme Car Exchange, LFD Auto Repairs and many more.

To find out more about the club, find them on social media or pop in to book onto a session once they open. To find out more about Ongo, go to: www.ongo.co.uk.
