Read MoreWitham Group, a leading UK manufacturer of lubricants, paints and workplace essentials, is urging motorists to prioritise vehicle cleanliness this winter to ensure safe and efficient travel.
“Cleanliness is crucial for both driver safety and vehicle performance, especially during the winter months,” says Nigel Bottom, MD of Witham Group. “Accumulated grime can obstruct visibility, while salt and grit can damage paintwork and affect vehicle handling.”
Data reveals more severe road accidents happen in winter
Winter driving data reveals more severe road accidents happen in winter. An investigation by Admiral Car Insurance has revealed how many motorists are unprepared for driving in winter weather and ignore weather warnings despite the increased risk of an accident during winter.
Claims data over the last five years revealed that on average, there is a 25% increase in the number of car insurance claims made in November compared with April– which sees the lowest number of accident claims on average.
Avoid Common Winter Driving Mistakes
Witham Group is also encouraging customers to avoid these common mistakes in the cold weather:
Using Hot Water to De-ice Your Windscreen: While tempting to speed up the process, pouring hot or boiling water on your windscreen can cause significant damage. The rapid temperature change can lead to glass cracking or shattering, leaving you with a more serious problem than a delayed commute.
Driving with Snow or Ice on Your Windscreen: Many drivers simply don’t know that it is against the law to drive with obstructed vision on a vehicle. The Road Traffic Act 1988 (Section 41D) explicitly prohibits driving with obstructed vision due to snow or ice on any glass panel (windscreen, windows, and rear windscreen). This includes a fine of up to £60 and three penalty points. Always ensure your vehicle is completely clear of snow and ice to maintain safety and comply with the law.
